Why Patients Don’t Pay; What Providers Should Know

In 2021, we independently polled healthcare consumers and RCM leaders about how patients want to pay their bills and found there is a disconnect between how patients and providers view patient payments and collections.

A few key insights that we learned are:

  • Medical bills still rank last to consumers in how they prioritize paying their monthly bills
  • 50% of patients overall prefer to make a payment at or before discharge – and not wait to pay until after they receive a statement
  • 78% of patients would return to the same hospital if it offered extended payment options
